Considering a Major or Minor
At Wake Forest, the psychology major and minor are designed to help students explore the field broadly while building strong analytical and research skills.
Many students begin psychology simply out of curiosity. Others are considering careers in health professions, business, law, education, public service, or research. Whether you are just exploring or already leaning toward a major or minor, the best way to begin is through coursework.
Where Should I Start?
1. Take Introductory Psychology (PSY 151)
PSY 151 provides an overview of the field and is the foundation for advanced coursework. AP or IB credit may be accepted in place of taking PSY 151.
2. Explore a Perspectives Course (PSY 220–299)
Perspectives courses introduce you to major areas within psychology and require only Introductory Psychology as a prerequisite. They are an excellent way to explore different subfields of the discipline and what kinds of topics interest you the most.
Students considering the major are encouraged to complete at least one Perspectives course during their first year if possible.
3. Plan for Research Methods
Students who intend to major in psychology should plan to take PSY 211 (Research Methods I) in their sophomore year if possible. This course is required before declaring the major and must be completed with a C or better.
Students who intend to minor in psychology should plan to take PSY 210 (Research Methods for Minors). This can be taken at any time, but we encourage students to take it earlier rather than later, so it can enrich their experiences of other courses in Psychology.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is psychology a good major for pre-med or other health professions?
Yes. The major includes substantial training in research design and data analysis and aligns well with many pre-health pathways. There are psychology questions on the MCAT.
Can I double major?
Yes, psychology can be combined with most majors. Some popular combinations include biology, economics, communication, politics & international affairs, sociology, or business, etc. Your advisor can help you plan how to combine psychology with other areas of study.
Can I study abroad?
Yes. With planning, students can study abroad and complete the major on time. Early planning—especially around the research methods sequence—is important. Students interested in Honors should complete their study abroad before spring of their junior year.
