Declaring a Psychology Major or Minor
Ready to declare Psychology as your major or minor? Here’s what you need to know.
Eligibility to Declare the Major
Students may declare the Psychology major after they have:
- Completed PSY 211 (Research Methods I) with a C or better
- Completed at least one Perspectives course (PSY 220–299)
- Earned a 2.0 or higher GPA in graded psychology courses
Most students declare during or after their sophomore year. Students taking PSY 211 in the spring may declare once grades are posted.
Eligibility to Declare the Minor
Students may declare the Psychology minor after they have:
- Declared at least one major
We encourage students to complete at least Introductory Psychology (PSY 151; or equivalent) before declaring the minor.
How to Declare
Students declare all program changes, including Psychology majors or minors, through the University’s official declaration process in Workday.

After You Declare
Once declared, you will be assigned a Psychology faculty advisor who will work with you on course planning, research opportunities, and long-term academic goals.
You are responsible for understanding and following all policies governing the major or minor, including limits on transfer credit, courses taken outside the department, and course sequencing requirements. These policies are outlined in the Undergraduate Bulletin, which is the official and authoritative source for degree requirements.
